Case Study – The Alternative Highway Code

After the success of their 2016 summer PR campaign “Snack Test Dummies”, 1st Central Insurance once again asked Echo Video to work with them to produce video content for their 2017 PR campaign. The concept this time was based around a recent survey that they had undertaken to discover the top most annoying things passengers do in cars. The video would feature etiquette expert William Hanson giving a lift to an irritating female passenger who would act out the top 5 scenarios. The challenge for us was that they wanted to be able to film this while on the move, driving around the Sussex countryside in order to create a Carpool Karaoke style video.

In-car filming

Without the resources (or smooth US hmonitoringighways) of Carpool Karaoke and after some research and experimentation we settled on filming the video using three Canon 5D MKIIIs with wide angle lenses. These were attached to the windscreen using suction cup mounts with extra support underneath to dampen any vibrations or bumps. We also had four mics to pick up audio and all the sound and video was sent wirelessly to the support car from where we could monitor and direct the action.

A successful PR campaign

camera-setup2The video has been a great success with the story picked up by a number of major newspapers and garnering thousands of views online. In addition to the full length version, we also create five short clips for 1st Central to use as part of a social media campaign which they ran for a week. All told these shorter videos received over 30,000 views and 2,000 shares and comments making it their most successful campaign to date.
